Entry to the Russia requires obtaining a Russian visa for the period of staying in the country. It is issued on the base of the official invitation (so called “visa support letter”) from the Russian side by Russian Consulate in your home country.
The Russian visa is a document either inserted into the passport or stamped inside it. The Russian visa fee is paid in Russian Consulates in your country. Terms of visa papers issuing are different in each and every country.
Presence of the Russian visa as well as passport is checked by passport control at arrival to Russia and departure from the country. Also it may be checked in other cases (at hotels, during visa registration).
Take in mind that your Russian visa is also an exit permission from Russia, so if you lose it or stay longer than your visa stipulates, leaving the country may be rather complicated.
