ARGO TRAVEL   Travel Tools   Tips and advice   Public Transport & Road traffic

St. Petersburg Russia has a developed network of public transportation. Here you may find a lot of routes by buses, trolley buses, trams and, of course, metro.

To tell the truth, during the last years, it seems obvious, that a tendency of decreasing of city’s public transport is in progress. But instead of them we have some more commercial transport. Among them taxi-minibuses have been becoming more popular. All the public transport costs very cheap. But for ground transport you may waste a lot of time while waiting for it. In St. Petersburg Russia ground transport operates from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Bus stops are indicated by square yellow signs marked with the letter "A". Trolley-bus stops are indicated by blue boards with the red letter "m" or lightened boards with a blue letter “m”. They are usually mounted on poles. Tram stops are indicated by boards with a letter "T" hanging on the electric wires.

There are also taxi-minibuses, which are called "marshrutnoe taksi" or "marshrutki"; they have numbers and route descriptions written in Russian on the side windows. They are much more comfortable than most transport and you always get a seat.

The another kind of public transport what we are proud of is Metro. There are 57 underground stations in St. Petersburg Russia forming 4 lines of the Metro Network. Normally trains arrive every 2-4 minutes. It starts working from 5.45 a.m. and ends at 0.30 a.m. Perhaps, it is most reliable and convenient transport among all. At least you always know when you will be at arranged place. By metro you may go from one part of the city to another in less than one hour. But take in mind, that in metro you will not find any word on English. So we recommend you to buy the city map with metro map right after arriving. You will easily find such maps on many languages.

Also we suggest you to avoid using the public transport during the rush hours (in the morning from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and in the evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) During this time public transport is usually overcrowded. Before going to somewhere ask guide or any city inhabitant how much time it will take for your trip and how to get to the place better.

Road traffic is very intensive (especially in the center of city). At rush hours it often has “Stops”. Very often drivers break the speed limits (especially if the road conditions let them to do it) and make other traffic violations. Also it is true that most drivers dislike giving a priority for walkers even at unregulated crossroads. So, crossing the streets, be always careful!
