Despite of many attempts of making of St Petersburg as a “crime capital” of Russia, crime level is not so high. We have serious crimes at the spheres, which are not connected with travel persons themselves that is tax payments, bribery, finances and some others.
So you could not be a victim of street crime you should follow some simple recommendations and be a bit more sensible and careful at any time.
The most spread kind of crime that affects travelers is street thievery. The highest majority of those, who suffered from street thieves had known, it could happen. But, of course, they thought it would not happen with them. When one of our czeck tourists was stolen documents from her bag (so she could not go out of the country in time with the group), she told “I was informed well, but I always had all my documents in the bag during all my journeys on Europe!”
Despite of many urgent cautions some accidents still may take place. You should avoid keeping into your pockets a lot of cash and show them when you pay. Have all your money and documents in secure place not in a loose pocket somebody could easily slip their hand into.
Take a special care of your documents and passport. If you loose your passport, you will definitely get a long, difficult and expensive way of having the relationship with your country consulate.
You should watch out for the Gypsy kids though and the Gypsy women. They have a culture of thievery. If you see them on the same metro train or bus, get off and wait for your next ride. They are known for surrounding people and going into their pockets and other tricks.
If something bad happened to you, go to the police as soon as possible! It is possible they will help you to bring back your loosen things. We are sure that if you are careful and follow some safe rules - nothing bad will happen to you.
